Bruin Baseball Goes 1-1 Regional Day 1
It was an up-and-down day at the ballpark for Bartlesville High Bruin baseball in the 6A Regionals on Tuesday, as BHS upset the one-seed but fell in the winner’s bracket semifinal nightcap.
Game one against Union was one for the books in a 2-1 BHS win.
Bruin senior Brenden Asher sparkled through seven one-run innings and Bartlesville down 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh scored two to win it. The victory is the second for Asher over Union on the road in the playoffs in as many years. The Redhawks are still one loss from elimination after the defeat.
Mason Dryden put the ball in play with the bases loaded and one out, a Redhawk throwing error would allow two runs to score and give Bartlesville the win.
Asher wiggled out of major trouble in the second inning, allowing only one run on four hits while facing seven Union batters. Bartlesville’s defense threw two Redhawks out at the plate in the frame, which would prove huge later.
Final line for Asher, he threw seven innings, scattered five hits, struck out five and walked only one.
In the game two winner’s bracket contest, Sand Springs would pull away for an 8-1 win.
Sandites scored three in the third then tacked on single runs in the fourth and sixth. Three more aided by a Bruin error in the seventh would put the writing on the wall.
Bartlesville did score a run in the seventh. The Bruins got an RBI from Jaxon Zaun to break up the shutout.
Bartlesville will now have to win three in a row to get to state and it starts with a rematch with Union. Redhawks beat Bishop Kelley to stay alive late on Tuesday, 4-2.
Bartlesville at Union elimination game starts at 1:00 on Wednesday afternoon. Winner gets Sand Springs at 4:00 in the first of two possible Regional championship games.
