Bartlesville High is looking for a new boys’ basketball coach.

Clent Stewart is resigning his position as Bruin head coach after 10 seasons with BHS, according to a release from Bartlesville Public Schools on Tuesday afternoon.

Stewart, a former Kansas State men’s basketball star and Tulsa native, took over the program prior to the 2014-15 season.

Bartlesville High Athletic and Activities Director Thad Dilbeck says Stewart will be missed.

According to Dilbeck, the search for a new head coach will begin immediately. Historically the Bartlesville High boys’ basketball team has been one of the schools’ best programs since the merging of the two high schools.

The Bruins have made 13 state tournaments since 1982, including 11 in an 18 year span from 1988-2006, but none since 2012. Bartlesville won state titles in 1989, 1991 and 1992.

Dilbeck says he expects heavy interest in the position.

Bartlesville will put together a group of individuals with a vested interest in BHS hoops to review candidates after the job is posted, in addtion to seeking out other possible candidates in the region.

Dilbeck talks about the process.

Stewart finishes his 10 seasons at Bartlesville with an 83-154 record. Bartlesville had two appearances in the Area Tournament during that span – in 2015 and 2018.

In the release Stewart said “I’m committed to help and share as much information as I can during this time to ensure a smooth transition. I appreciate the support that . . . Bartlesville administration has given me over the past ten years.”

Bartlesville is coming off a 3-21 season with several underclassmen in line to build off previous experience in 2024-25.

Stewart replaced Tim Bart, who led the Bruin program from 2001-2014.

Continuing in a statement Dilbeck said, "We appreciate Coach Stewart’s continued commitment to Bartlesville basketball. He has worked tirelessly to make young basketball players better and to teach students the value of hard work.”

More is planned on this story throughout the week.
