Nowata Basketball Hire's Derick Ott
The Nowata Ironmen schoolboard officially named Derick Ott as the new basketball coach this Monday after former coach Nate Smith announced his resignation in April. Ott comes from a long line of coaching in his family and has been serving as an assistant in Verdigris for the past 11-years. Ott talks about how this opportunity came about.
Ott said he also had some help from the former Ironmen skipper Nate Smith and that he had glowing opinions about the community and ensured that he would not be leaving if not for his wife’s new job. This will be Ott’s first head coaching job, but he says he ready for the job and his some high expectations for year one.
Ott is taking over a loaded Ironmen squad that only graduated one senior from a 20-7 team that also won the Northeast Valley Conference, and came up one game short of the state tournament.
