One-And-One Free Throws Eliminated in High School Basketball for 2023-24

High School basketball season may be several months away, but a major rule change is in store for the 2023-24 season involving fouls and free throws.

Teams will shoot two free throws after the opposing team has committed five fouls in a quarter. Team fouls will reset after each quarter.

What changes from this rule change to the previous rules? Before these rule changes, teams’ fouls would count for the first half of a game and then reset for the second half.

It also eliminates the one-and-one free throw where teams would shoot a free throw starting with the seventh foul in a half. If the player makes the first free throw, he/she would be rewarded with a second free throw attempt while a miss would take away an opportunity for a second free throw.

The NFHS sited a chance for a decrease in injuries on rebounding situations, an improvement on game flow and allowing teams to adjust their play for reasons of the rule change.

This rule change follows what women’s college basketball adopted in 2015.
