OSSAA Lifts Summer Dead Period Requirement

Unsurprisingly so, the OSSAA Board of Directors voted 14-0 in favor of suspending the summer dead period that was previously required for all high school athletes. The period was slated between June 27th and July 5th this year. Most believed that a near three month shutdown for the pandemic gave athletes the rest they needed.

This frees up offseason strength and conditioning activities for all athletes. Also, it means that summer baseball teams can play at OSSAA sites during that week. Last year that was not the case. This forced the Glen Winget Memorial Tournament to host several games at Oklahoma Wesleyan, which countered the spirit of the mandate.

This year, the Glen Winget Tournament being played at the newly-renovated Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium faces a different obstacle. Bartlesville Public Schools has not cleared the site for athletic competition as KWON has previously reported. However, if something changes on that front before July 2, there would be nothing restricting the tournament from carrying on how did in every summer prior to 2018.
