For Now, No Summer Baseball at Doenges Stadium

The Doenges Ford Indians will kick off the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday afternoon, and it will be in a different setting than normal.

The Indian’s rival, the Three Rivers Bandits, will visit the Oklahoma Wesleyan University baseball facility off Silver Lake for the double-header. Games will begin at 4:00 and 6:00 on Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The Indians games this summer will not be played at Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium.

Bartlesville Public Schools, which owns and operates the stadium, has decided to keep the facility closed for the time being. BPS is following guidelines that were set out by the OSSAA in May in its reopening of facilities amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Ultimately, the OSSAA outline for the reopening failed at its most recent board meeting. However, Bartlesville, along with many other 6A schools in the state, is choosing to use them as a template for their return for athletics.

Those guidelines do not permit games at facilities owned by the school district.

Bartlesville High Athletic and Activities Director Thad Dilbeck helps explain why Doenges will not be open for this weeks Indians games.

As with everything dealing with the coronavirus has been, the plan is tentative and subject to change. Indians manager John Pannell says he understands the school district has to look out for its students and everyone around them.

Eventually, Pannell says he wanted to move on with a schedule, and the summer team as normal, with or without the stadium being open.

Bartlesville stands at 2-2 on the season before Tuesday's outing.

Game one at 4:00 PM will air on Sports Talk 1500 AM and 99.1 FM – KPGM. While game two at 6:00 PM will air on KWON – AM 1400 and FM 93.3. You can check out the broadcasts with some video online at KWONTV.com, as well.

Bartlesville Bruin Bradee Rigdon and Caney Valley Trojan Daniel Barham are the probable starting pitchers for the Indians on Tuesday afternoon.
