Oklahoma Union clinched its spot in the 2A State Basketball Tournament with a 59-53 win over Hulbert on Saturday night. The Cougars led wire-to-wire to seal their first trip to The Big House since 2005.

The Cougars trap defense caused issues for the Riders early on. Dillon Ellis and Baylor Nash were able to score transitions buckets early on off Hulbert turnovers. OKU led 16-13 after one quarter of play.

Eight different Cougars scored in the first half to take a 32-26 lead into the locker room. Hulbert hung around in the second half. OKU briefly stretched its lead to nine in the third quarter but the Riders would hang around. The combo of Nash and Ellis linked up to put the game away late.

Jace Hollingshed would ice the game with free throws in the final minutes as well. Hollingshed, Nash, Ellis and Nate Collier were all in double-figures in the win. Here’s how the final call sounded on KRIG 104.9 FM.

After appearing in the area tournament for the third consecutive year the Cougars finally got over the hump. This is the first state tournament for OKU head coach Lee Ott. He spoke on the magnitude of the moment.

OKU is 22-2 on the season and will play in Oklahoma City on Thursday. The 2A State bracket is expected to be released in the near future.
