Winget Undergoes Major Shake Up

The new OSSAA dead period has caused some major changes to this year’s Glen Winget Tournament – as the Doenges Ford Indian’s will not be able to play in their own stadium.

The tournament will now take place at two sites - Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium for teams outside the state - and the Oklahoma Wesleyan practice field for teams with players from Oklahoma.

As we reported earlier this week, the OSSAA mandated dead period prohibits high school athletes from doing any activity in any OSSAA high school’s facilities in a nine-day period from June 29-July 7.

Because of this rule – no Bartlesville High baseball players would be able to compete for the Indian’s at Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium during the Winget. This is because Bill Doenges Stadium is owned and operated by Bartlesville High School. Tournament Director John Pannell explains what has happened over the past weekend.

The Winget and the Indian’s were under the impression that registering the tournament as a Stan Musial World Series qualifier would make it a national-level tournament, thus being an exception to the dead period. The OSSAA got back with the tournament on Friday to let them know that the organization disagreed and that the Winget would still be subject to the rule.

The rule has forced the Winget to have all Oklahoma teams play their games at the Oklahoma Wesleyan practice field. The field does not have lights, which means those games will have to be played during the day.

Pannell, like many others, says he is frustrated with the logic that Oklahoma teams are allowed to play 2 miles south of Doenges Stadium, but not at the main facility.

The new schedule slates Bartlesville to play at 3:15 on Wednesday against Ada – and then 2:15 on Thursday vs. Shawnee and then Friday at 2:15 against Ft. Smith.
